The City of Chania is the first destination of this fully day-trip.
You will have 3 hours of free time to explore the city. The experienced guide will give you a perfect introduction for first-time visitors and inside tips. You´ll get a great overview and orientation of Chania - City.
Explore the local streets on a walking tour of the city.
Chania is one of the oldest cities in Crete. It is famous for its diverse cultural heritage, archeological ruins, classical buildings and fascinating history. The Old Town is the heart of Chania. It is perfectly formed by narrow labyrinth like alleyways and buildings dating back to various ancient periods of time. Chania for many, the most beautiful town in Crete The town is simply unique and alive. Chania is the second largest City of Crete. Large parts of the old town are closed to traffic; the bulk of the Venetian mansions restored or converted into hotels. One of the most important constructions of the Venetian Period is the Entrance of Renier Mansion. In former times Chania was divided in 3 parts the East part for the Muslims the Southwest part for the Jewish and the West part for the Christians. In the East oft he old town there are traces of the Turks: a small minaret or masonry. On the Northeast of the Venetian walls there is the only preserved gate “The rampart Sabbionara” still preserves its Turkish name "koum - kapi (Kum Kapisi = the Gate of the Sand it is constructed in the sea. On the front of the rampart, the circular Venetian emblem of the lion of Agios Marcos is still preserved. The Byzantine Wall was built in 12th century and its outline is irregular with longitudinal axle from the East to the West, where its two central gates were located. For those who like shopping, it is worth looking at Venetian gold jewellery, some leather wares and of course, Cretan olive oil. If you travel by bus you are in the old town in a few minutes. If coming by car, use the pay car park near the Market Halls on Nikiforou Foka Street. The port of Chania cannot be used by modern ships because of the shallow water, which contributed in preserving its old character. In the old town of Chania you will only see the Marina for Yachting and small ships. Soak up the atmosphere on a walking tour trough the old tow of Chania which is considered an open air museum. The magnificent beauty that awaits you.

Our next and final destination is Falassarna Beach, which is located on the west coast of Crete. Falassarna beach has been awarded for being the best beach in Crete and one of the top 10 beaches in Europe. It has light pick coloured sand and crystal clear waters with long magical waves coming in from the Mediterranean.

Falassarna is a nature reserve with dunes on the west coast of Crete. It extends over a length of about 2 km. Falassarna is a Paradise for surfing. There are two watersports-stations www.surfingcrete.webs.com and www.surfisland.gr offering Stand Up Boards (SUP), Surfing and Kite Surfing. The area consists of several sandy beaches and a few small apartment houses. There are two beach clubs with good music, where fast food is offered and 5 very good restaurants. The beach clubs also offer sun loungers and parasols (price for booth 2 chairs and an umbrella = 8 €,) There are no shops. On the big beach there are 2 watersports stations. Highlight in Falassarna are the excavations of the ancient port city Polirinia from the 6th century BC. The excavations are at the end of the bay, where it is rocky. My favorite place there is the carved stone throne. What for a function it had is still unclear. The throne is located south of the excavations and anyone can sit down in, what I naturally enjoyed!

Here you will have 3 hours of free time to relax and enjoy the sun. After that we return to Rethymno, where you will be taken back to your hotel.

The first stop is at the amphitheatrically built village of Agia Galini in South Crete.
Here you will have 1 hour to explore the village. The small, traditional houses and the harbor make the perfect match for a coffee break. Agia Galini is a small, but all the more so lively location on Crete`s southern coast. Built right up the hillside, tavernas and studios jostle each other (the meaning of the place name is holy sea tranquillity!). Some streets are pedestrian only and a small harbour completes the picture. The beautiful beach (which in summer can get very hot) is only a few minutes walk away.

The next stop is at Malata where you´ll have 3 hour of free time for swimming and enjoying the golden sandy beach. In Matala you can visit the Hippies caves. There are several tavernas where you can take refreshments. According to legend, Zeus, the father of the gods, went ashore here with the king´s daughter, Europa. Today the caves are protected. From the beach one can see the holes in the sand stone cliffs. Matala is not only known for its beautiful beaches but also for its artificially carved caves that date all the way back to the Minoan period. These same caves were later occupied by a hippy commune in the late 60’s and 70’s. Many musicians have composed song about the beauty of Matala including Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens.
On the way back to the north coast we´ll make a stop over at the mountain-village Spili. You´ll experience a traditional cretan village with its well know lion-head fountains in its centre. Walking along its cobbled streets you can explore the tourist shops which are full of traditional Cretan products.
