Milatos - East Crete

  • Crete East Crete
  • Crete East Crete
  • Crete East Crete
Milatos consists of two districts, the "Paralia Milatos" the part at the beach and the "Ano Milatos" in the inland, the small town has been inhabited 3000 years ago. Today Milatos is a sleepy fishing village with a small harbor. The small bays have a clean pebble beach and a small sandy bay. The upper district in the inland "Pano Milatos", is a protected settlement. Many old houses have been faithfully and lovingly restored. The highlight of this village is the tavern with live music and the village church, but also the Milatos cave. Unlike the neighboring towns of Malia and Elounda, Milatos is still very sleepy with some taverns at the beach. In the winding hinterland is the mountain village of Kounali with its village tavern, which offers cyclists refreshments (the region is very popular with cycling enthusiasts and paragliders). In short you will feel comfortable in Milatos when you are seeking a authentic village without mass tourism

Of course, a trip to the Lassithi plateau is also very interesting. Formerly called the land of 1000 windmills. Today you can see the large reservoir and the more modern irrigation systems. The Kardiotisa Monastery (Kera) is also worth a visit. This monastery is dedicated to the Blessed Mother. It is an old nunnery that was first mentioned in 1333. It was known for the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Kardiotissa. The wall painting is from the 14th century. According to legend this icon was stolen 3 times by the Turks and it found alone the way back. The third time the icon was chained up on a pillar, the icon including the pillar and its chain found its way back to the monastery again. The chain is still next to the icon. The elevated location of the monastery high above the plateau with its arcades and viewpoints was a magical place for us the Kreta.com team. The saints already knew where it was most beautiful.
