Day Trip to Plakias & Prevali

Rethymnon - Plakias - Prevali Gorge. Highlight: Boat trip to Prevali Gorge. From Rethymnon follow the direction of Plakias to the South coast and the Lybian Sea. The road is well-built and impressive with interesting rock formations to see and you pass the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. Kourtaliotiko means “castanets”. The Cretans say that when the wind blows through the Gorge it sounds as if someone is playing the castanets so that is why this Gorge was named Kourtaliotiko.
When you arrive in Plakias you can while away the time in the inviting tavernas and perhaps enjoy a “Frappe”.
Tavernas and cafés surround the small harbour, which has a beautiful sandy beach. The small excursion boats at the harbour offer trips to the Prevali Gorge a couple of times a day. These boat trips are well worth it!! Water flows in the Prevali Gorge even in the summer and the small boats let you off at the estuary where the fresh water flows out into the sea.
You can walk up the estuary. The Gorge is lined with palm trees and you can refresh yourself in the natural pools, which are like large baths. Hikers can walk up the Gorge to visit the Prevali Cloister. This beautiful boat trip to the Prevali Gorge is a marvellous experience for children of all ages – and not only for children!!
