Elafonissos is smal Island (like a lagoon) in the south-west-coast of crete. It’s a paradise for sand dune & sand hill – lovers. The Island is accessible from the lagoon on foot.
Elafonissos by car: We recommend this trip by car and not with a guide. First you have to follow the highway to Kastelli / Kissamos ( New Road ) it is the main coast road in west Crete. Before arriving Kastelli you will see the sign “ Elafonissos” (sometimes is Elafonissi written not Elafonissos and sometimes “KOUTSAMADOS”. The way to Elafonissos is easy you have only to follow the sign. On the half way you past the chest nut – village “ELOS” it is a really one picturesque Village on crete. The drive from the northwest coast ( Kastelli / Kissamos) to Elafonisi takes 1 ˝ hour ( 40 kilometres). On the half way you will cross a tunnel and the highway will be winding. You will pass through two climes in the countryside you will see green valleys and different trees and on the coast it is like a dessert and at the end you will see this wonderful lagoon with clear water and the sand is pink in several places from the coral.
As Elafonissi is a Nature Reserve, you will find there toilettes, a café and a small fast food restaurant, and a water-sport-centre for canoe and pedalos, there are also sun beds and sunshades for rent. On the offshore Island “Elafonissi” you will find a nature trail through the dunes.
