Plakias, Crete South coast
Plakias, on Crete´s southern coast, is around 120 km from Heraklion Airport and 120 km from Chania. Coming from Rethymnon past the impressive Kourtajotiko Gorge, the Plakias Bay opens up. Fantastic sandy beaches (e.g. Damnoni Bay) have helped the location become more and more popular over the years. Tavernas are dotted close together at the small harbour from where boats go to the palm beach of Preveli.
Small individually run hotels and apartments are located in quiet side streets. Nowadays, there are also two discos but the place has flair and is still not overrun by tourists.
A hire car is a must as the buses run too infrequently to places of interest such as Rethymnon, Frangokastello and Spili, to name but a few.
